Exercising regularly can help you control your life. When you are active, your cells have increased sensitivity to insulin making it work better to lower your blood glucose levels or blood sugar. Normally, your digestive system breaks down the foods you eat into sugar. Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that helps sugar enter your cells to be used as fuel. When you have Insulin resistance it means that your body's muscle and liver cells don't respond properly to normal levels of insulin, the pancreatic hormone that carries glucose into the body's cells. This causes the glucose levels in the blood to go up, increasing the risk for diabetes. So, it is important to be proactive if you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes.
Moving regularly can make you feel better. Starting at your own pace is important to prevent injury. Taking regular walks around the block is a good example. If the weather is bad, choose your favorite songs and walk in place indoors. Make sure to talk to your doctor prior to starting your health routine if you have not been active. Remember small changes can make a big difference. If you feel overwhelmed, call a friend or family member for support.
