Being Off Balance
Balance training is important for fitness, especially for older adults. Without regular exercise, we typically lose muscle mass and strength. Believe it or not, as early as our thirties we start to lose the sense of where we are in space.
Proprioception refers to the body’s ability to perceive its own position in space. For example, proprioception enables a person to close their eyes and touch their nose with their index finger. Proprioception allows the body to perform simultaneous actions without stopping to think about each one separately, such as running while dribbling a basketball.
It’s ok to be a little wobbly especially if walking on uneven steps or rocks. But instability is not the issue, being off balance can put you at risk of falling and hurting yourself. To prevent it from happening, improving your balance is very important. It's important to do exercises that target your core.
